The Woodworker's Radio Webring was started in August 1997 and now has 448 sites. Unfortunately this ring may soon cease to exist. Webring was originally started by a young man named Sage. Awhile back GeoCities approached Sage about purchasing Webring. Of course over the time Sage owned Webring it had grown by leaps and bounds. This brought some growth problems as new server and equipment were constantly needed along with additional staff, buildings, etc. Sage felt it would be much better for Webring to be under the wing of GeoCities, so he sold Webring.
A few weeks later, GeoCities was purchased by Yahoo! Everything has gone pretty smoothly until just recently. Yahoo! now feels that each and every ringmaster and ring member needs to have a Yahoo! id. I honestly can't see why this is necessary other than the fact it will benefit Yahoo! This ring and others have grown and functioned in the past without needing a Yahoo! id. I will not be prey to Yahoo!'s marketing tactics. If indeed we are forced to join Yahoo!'s mailing lists and receive the myriad of e-mail we will more than likely get, I will unfortunately feel it necessary to remove the ring from their service.
At this point in time I am in a wait and see mode. I have sent a long letter to Yahoo! telling them why I don't like their new practices. Unfortunately I don't even expect a response. The fact that a company the size of Yahoo! feels that it must turn such a fine service as Webring into a money making scheme sickens me. Myself along with most other ringmasters spend countless hours a week managing our rings with no pay other than the satisfaction we receive from providing the service. Now Yahoo! comes along and turns all of our blood, sweat, and tears into more profits.
I was going to suspend the join option for the ring temporarily, but for now I have decided just to warn anyone joining the ring, that according to Yahoo!, any new members joining MUST get a Yahoo! id. So joiner beware. I will not guarantee how much longer this ring will be in existance. As I mentioned earlier, I will do nothing at this time. We will wait and see how this all actually unwinds.
